Fentanyl test strip quality monitoring program launched

Author: Marya Lieberman

Not all fentanyl test strips are the same, and the differences between different brands and even different batches of the same brand matter a lot when you're trying to detect lethal fentanyl levels in street drugs.  Published 15 June 2024 in Harm Reduction Journal, the recent commentary,  "An urgent need for community lot testing of lateral flow fentanyl test strips marketed for harm reduction in Northern America" describes how the manufacturing process for fentanyl test strips can lead to important differences in their ability to detect fentanyl and their vulnerability to false positives from common interferences.  Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Hayes and undergraduate researcher Charlie Desnoyers, whose observations are featured in this commentary.
